On the Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (1968)
63 years ago today, Congressman John Lewis was working on his speech for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
At only 23 years old, he was more than a little nervous preparing to address a crowd of more than 200,000 demonstrators and advocates, to speak out for justice, for jobs, and for economic opportunity.
“We must say: “Wake up America! Wake up!” For we cannot stop, and we will not and cannot be patient.”
Tomorrow, people will march at the National Mall in Washington D.C. to continue the call to action that John Lewis, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders gave 63 years ago.We are still fighting for the vision that John Lewis laid out for us on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
It’s a vision he shared with his beloved wife, Lillian Miles Lewis. They dedicated their lives to building a better, more just society.
Today, their vision is under threat.
From those who seek to suppress the right to vote instead of cherishing it.
From those who fear our immigrant neighbors instead of welcoming them.
From those who benefit when Americans are divided instead of united together as part of the same Beloved Community.
We cannot be patient. We cannot stop. We are committed to continuing the fight for freedom, the fight for economic opportunity, and uplifting the next generation of Good Troublemakers. Register. Organize. Speak up. Vote. We will not go backward.
