Statement from the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation

Congressman John Lewis taught us that the right to vote is sacred, and that democracy is not a state, but an act.

The Supreme Court’s decision allowing the Trump administration to move forward, for now, with efforts that could restrict mail-in voting should concern every American. With midterm voting beginning in weeks, changing the rules this late risks confusion and needless obstacles between citizens and the ballot box.

John Lewis was beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and jailed in the fight to secure voting rights for Black Americans. We must never go backward. Every eligible vote must count, whether cast in person, early, or by mail. This is not a partisan principle. It is an American one.

Register. Organize. Speak up. Vote. We will not go backward.
